According to Concise Oxford Dictionary, sacrifice means the practice or an act of killing an animal or person or surrendering a possession as an offering to a deity (an animal, person, or object offered in this way) and it also means an act of giving up something of value for the sake of something that is of greater value or importance.
Talking about sacrifice is talking about the Eid al-Adha "Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" which is a holiday celebrated by Moslems worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God (Ash-Shaffat: 100-109)
Eid al-Adha annually falls on the 10th day of the month of Dzul Hijja of the lunar Islamic calendar. The festivities last for three days or more depending on the country. Eid al-Adha occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Moslems worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.
The sacrifice that has done by the father Ibrahim to his son Ismail indicates the patience and sincerity of Ismail (Al-Anbiya`: 85). Allah the Almighty gave Ismail and his father; Ibrahim a great ordeal to do such an unbelievable command to cut off his own son as a sacrifice to prove his faith as the servant of Allah who resigns himself to fate and purify his love only to Allah. (Al-Anbiya`: 2-3)
We can take the lesson from this precious historical occurrence that sacrifice is really required in our life. We will never be able to enjoy everything in this universe without sacrificing. A wise man ever said “No pain no gain”; it means we must sacrifice over and over to reach the best achievement. As a good Moslem students, all we have to do is study, study and study… we can’t achieve our dreams and ideals without study hard.
The life episodes that we have through must not always be smooth as we hope, there must be a lot of obstacles we must face and confront. The best key to attain the successful life from all sacrifices that we have done are keeping our enthusiasm, never give up, and trying to do the best for the sake of our goodness. Indeed, life is sacrifice.
